New To Hockey? Start Here.

We Get It–Hockey Can be Overwhelming at first.

But here's the good news: you don't have to figure it out alone. We've helped tons of kids and families get started, and we're here to guide you every step of the way. All your child needs is curiosity, courage, and maybe a little help tying their skates.

What to Expect

A Welcoming Environment: Kids of all skill levels are welcome, and coaches are used to teaching both beginners and more advanced players.

Supportive Families: You'll quickly become part of a tight-knit community that cheers each other on–on and off the ice.

Lots of Growth: You'll be amazed at how quickly your player picks it up–and how much confidence they gain.

Gearing Up

One of the first challenges most new hockey parents face is securing and learning about hockey equipment. Hockey has a lot of gear, but you don't need to buy everything new. Many families start with hand-me-downs, swaps, or rentals.

We have sets of equipment for the younger age groups to borrow. Please inquire about this option!

What Gear Do We Need?

You're Not Alone

Everyone starts somewhere. If you're feeling unsure, reach out! Your team's coach or manager will be happy to walk you through what to expect, how to get fitted for gear, or where to be on day one.

Our board members are involved of every aspect of our association. Many of them are coaches and parents and can answer any question you may have.

Volunteering

Our community based youth hockey association depends heavily on parents to volunteer their time in order to keep hockey available locally and at an affordable price. Once you join youth hockey, the association will likely ask you to volunteer for minor tasks such as penalty box attendant, scorekeeper, or run the clock. There are lots of Volunteering Opportunities available. If you really want to get involved at a higher level, we welcome you to attend board meetings. Perhaps you'll end up our newest board member!

Fundraising

Similar to volunteering, fundraisers play a critical role in keeping registration fees low. Each year we create new fundraisers that range from silent auctions, raffle ticket sales and everything in between. Regardless of the type of event or sale, the more you can fundraise, the less expensive hockey will be for you and the rest of the families in your community.

Educate Yourself

Throughout your child's time in hockey, it's almost a certainty that you will be pressured on how you approach the game of hockey. From off season development opportunities to the type of equipment your player uses, other parents and program representatives are going to offer you free advice on what your player should do to improve. Not all of them will truly have you or your kid's best interests in mind. The key to deciphering them is education. Use the resources provided by the Lakers Hockey and USA Hockey to build a solid knowledge base and add to it by talking with a variety of people in your association and other local hockey associations.

Tame the Rollercoaster

Over the course of your child's time in sports, one of the best lessons they will learn is how to deal with adversity. Keeping that in mind will help you and your player view challenges as opportunities to learn and use your emotions in a positive way.

Find A Balance

Just like everything in life, it is important to maintain a nice balance between hockey and other activities. Encourage your child to become a well-rounded individual by pursuing other activities and interests outside of hockey.
